19 top lil wayne songs of 2016

19 Top Lil Wayne Songs of 2016

After a tough decision process, these are the 19 Top Lil Wayne Songs of the past year. 2016 has been a rough year for Lil Wayne and Lil Wayne fans alike. With all of the trouble surrounding him and his Cash Money Records problems, fans are holding on to slivers of hope of being able to see significant new music anytime soon. However, with the run of features that Weezy has put out this year, as well as the joint album with 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne has kept many fans just barely appeased.

(To see the complete list of Lil Wayne Songs 2018 click here)

One interesting note as you prepare to pour over this list, is this: How many other artists in 2016 put out enough A1 quality features to potentially make an album? The answer to that question doesn't exactly matter, as Lil Wayne did just that this past year. Enjoy these 19 best Lil Wayne songs and guest verses of 2016 and make sure to leave comments with your version if you disagree.

1. Fat Albert - Curren$y ft. Lil Wayne

Let me just start by saying, I haven’t heard a song like this since “Barry Bonds,” and this song tops it. Curren$y goes hard with his smooth and conceptual delivery, but Lil Wayne absolutely destroys this song. I mean DESTROYS. This is one of those tracks that people will reference when they explain to youngsters why Lil Wayne is the greatest rapper of all time. This is an almost 2-minute verse of Wayne going nuts (1:54 to be exact). There’s a ton of standout punchlines. A must listen to.

Standout Lyric: "Rich nigga laughing at his bills like Bill Murray"

2. No Problem - Chance the Rapper ft. 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne

This is certainly one of Weezy’s best verses of the year. The song is the bellwether for Chance’s new album and 2 Chains gives a memorable verse as well. Wayne shows with this verse that at any given time he can take over a track and make it a standout. The song by itself would be catchy and good, but with Wayne’s addition, it puts it over the top.

Standout Lyric: "Fuck a watch I'll buy a new arm."

3. I Got a Question - YG ft. Lil Wayne

This West Coast-style banger could have easily been number one. It actually is my personal favorite from the year 2016, if I had a dollar for every time I've streamed it this year I'd have more money that Weezy himself. But, even though it didn't make number one, it's still one of Lil Wayne's most impressive hits of the year. He shows his amazing versatility by fitting perfectly with YG's West Coast swag, and silkily changing cadences twice as he builds up to the end of the song. Wayne comes through for his blood-brother YG again, and of course, a 2016 top Lil Wayne songs list wouldn't be complete without YG's name showing up a few times.

Standout Lyric: "Cock back, point-forward like LeMarcus Aldredge."

4. Key to the Streets - YFN Lucci ft. 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne

Weezy kills this verse. It’s a strong song all the way through but Wayne starts off at a slow pace and then picks up steam to a roaring boil that keeps going for a minute and fifteen seconds. The track was good already with 2 Chainz and company, but Weezy took it over the top with his spectacular finish.

Standout Lyric: "Lit like an electric eel, fat rims anorexic wheels."

5. Bout That - Jeezy ft. Lil Wayne

Possibly tied with "I Got a Question" as my favorite of the year, I can't explain enough how much I love this song. Wayne goes just as hard as this beat deserves. Jeezy takes this song back to the days when Houston was killing the rap game along with Atlanta right by its side. It feels like a Crunk-Trill mashup that is dominating clubs across the world. Jeezy is one of the kings of Coke rap, along with Wayne, and they link up with a nice one-two punch on this one.

Standout Lyric: "We moving slow and thinking quick, you ain't about this gangsta shit."

6. Back on the Bullshyt - 2 Chainz ft. Lil Wayne

The fact that this video only has about 300k views on YouTube is ridiculous. Chainz made a mistake by not pushing this track harder before the release of ‘Collegrove.’ This track should’ve been included on Collegrove, and it should’ve been the song they performed on Jimmy Fallon.

All that criticism to say, the song is amazing. It’s in the running for one of Wayne’s best verses of the year. It’s full of trademark Weezy wordplay, and in my opinion, has the perfect mix of auto-tune. Another must-listen-to.

Standout Lyric: "Big thang parked in the driveway, squad hotter than Zimbabwe. iPhone got a nigga irate ringing all day, all day like Kanye."

7. Off Off Off (Cavs Championship Song) - Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne is the best at making sports references in songs. Most people struggle to have one natural sounding sports metaphor in their rap, and Weezy just pulled off making an entire song into one. The track also had magical powers, as it led to the Cavs coming back from being down 3-1 to win the NBA Finals.

Standout Lyric: "Here comes the fast break it's led by Lebron just get out the man's way, he's something like an earthquake, as soon as he dunk it we all feel the world shake like 'Arrivederci.'"

8. Oh Lord - Gucci Mane ft. Lil Wayne

This song has to make the list just because it’s Gucci’s return! But the beat is nothing less than the edgy, southern bass-blasting magic you expect from Gucci and Weezy. Wayne goes hard on this one, the second half of his verse speeds up and his intensity is great.

Standout Lyric: "I gotta feed the family, but I had to leave the family, cut off CMB I'm an amputee, but I'll never leave Christianity."

9. Bounce - 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne

The lead music video from their joint effort Collegrove, "Bounce" was a battle-rap inspired back and forth track between a Chainz and Wayne. The beat is uptempo and lends itself well to this style of rap, and the two rappers seemed like they had a lot of fun doing it. Definitely one of their best songs of the year.

Standout Lyric: "I'm having lunch with Italian's son they don't ask the subject, 'Lord why you took Rabbit from me?' He said don't ask me nothing!"

10. Intro - DJ Drama ft. Lil Wayne

Wayne usually does a great job for his long-time homies, and DJ Drama is no different. Weezy and Drama go way back and Wayne hooks him up with a classic fierce freestyle-esque track here, simply titled “Intro.” Standout line: “I gave birth to your style, I need a check for my labor.”

Standout Lyric: “I gave birth to your style, I need a check for my labor.”

11. Mad - Solange ft. Lil Wayne

This one is a nice r&b beat and Solange reminds that Beyonce’s not the only Knowles with the pipes. Wayne’s verse is good here, it subtly fits with the down vibe of the song and his cadence and tone is unique and different from much of his output this year and many of similar artists.

Standout Lyric: "I used to rock hand-me-downs, now I rock standing crowds, but it's hard when you only got fans around, no fam around, and if htey are then they hands is out."

12. Gold (Remix) - Kiiara ft. Lil Wayne

This song was a big opportunity for Weezy to keep it fresh with the younger crowd, as the 'Gold' hit from Kiiara is an EDM style sizzler that gets stuck in everybody's head. With that said, Wayne didn't disappoint with this verse. He fits perfectly in with the tempo, using a silky smooth cadence that lends perfectly to his punchline heavy style. Wayne should do MUCH more with EDM-style beats.

Standout lyric: "I'm a muddy cup savage, money bag addict, such a pill popper, did you know they have daddy's?"

13. Like Dat (Remix) - PARTYNEXTDOOR ft. Jeremih, Lil Wayne

The first time I heard this song it was stuck in my head for two weeks. Between this song and “Dat Part” from SchoolBoy Q it’s tough to not go around saying “dat” every other word. It’s a smooth verse while still keeping a high level of intensity. Wayne and Jeremih always make great music when they're on the same track, and this song is no exception. Wayne's verse here goes fast and furious. Full of great one liners as well.

Standout Lyric: "That money train is on the way hoe, well you can tie me to the railroad!"

14. Let Me Love You - Ariana Grande ft. Lil Wayne

Wayne’s feature on this song is certainly on point. The song itself is a shameless ripoff of Jeremih’s “All The Time”, even to the point to where Lil Wayne makes an appearance, which he did on the All the Time Remix. Wayne delivers just as good a verse on Grande’s “version” however, and helps make the song a standout for her latest catalog. If Weezy saw a track in front of Grande’s massive opportunity, he certainly capitalized with this feature.

Standout Lyric: "My ex tripping it's no Biggie, I Tu-pac shook-her."

15. Hype (Remix) - Drake ft. Lil Wayne

Wayne goes hard in this guest verse for Drizzy, with a nice Barney reference of all things. If there’s anyone who can make a Barney reference work, it’s Weezy. You have to love these songs from Wayne where he goes hard from the first second he starts rapping and continues piling on great pieces of wordplay and methapors throughout the entire verse.

Standout Lyric: "I pull up on ya in that purple thing bumping Purple Rain singing Purple Rain sipping purple rain, pouring champagne off commercial fame."

Standout Barney reference: "I call my AK 'Barney', and I'ma let this Baby Bop!"

16. MF'N Right (Remix) - 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne

This song wasn’t even originally included on the Collegrove. At least, not the version with Wayne. Weezy’s verse takes the song to another level with his standout verse. The song was good to begin with, featuring a nice beat from Mike Will Made It and Chainz colorful stripper flirting in the beginning. Wayne starts off a full speed with a silky smooth cadence that continues for almost the entire verse. As a whole, it’s one of my favorites from the Collegrove album. Due to all of 2 Chainz and Weezy's collaborations from this year, the "19 Top Lil Wayne Songs" could've been named the "10 Top Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz Songs" of 2016. Who knows, maybe that will be another list.

Standout Lyric: "All this blang blang blang, you ain't gang gang gang, you ain't squad squad squad, you ain't hot like Hagen Das."

17. Trill - YG ft. Lil Wayne

YG and Weezy need to cool it. I mean, is there such thing as too much fire? Okay, no there's not. Just ask Lil Wayne fans in 2008. This is a recent release from YG and Weezy put in another standout performance. These two make heat every time they touch the same track, and Wayne may have some secret vault of great verses reserved only for YG. Similar to the vaults he probably has for Chris Brown and Lloyd.

Standout Lyric: "Ya mama turn tricks and ya homies turn state, and my homies turn weight to some cake."

18. Blue C-Note - 2 Chainz ft. Lil Wayne

Really love this song. Great beat and Wayne continues the year of semi-articulated smooth mumble rap with an auto-tuned up verse here. The verse is legit, though, and may get stuck in your head for a few days.

Standout Lyric: “I keep on switching wifies, you gotta Uncle Phil me”

19. Grateful - Lil Wayne ft. Gudda Gudda

Nice song from Wayne with a great anti-Cash Money line with the “vasectomy” line. It was originally released as a Tidal exclusive, and I wonder whether it's going to be included on his upcoming album "The Funeral." You see a reflective Weezy here, looking back with sadness on his time at Cash Money and the difficulty he's currently in.

Standout Lyric: "They can't put no more Weezy Baby out, that's that Cash Money vasectomy."

As 2016 comes to a close, here's to Lil Wayne for giving us enough to hold us over until he gets out of his label troubles.
